Short description

Biographic film chronicling the last year of the life of the Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani, 1919, who falls in love with a girl from a wealthy family. Her parents are against this relationship and stop financial help. Modigliani worked and died in abject poverty in the Montparnasse Quarter of Paris, France.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Director Max Ophüls died shortly after filming began and was replaced by Jacques Becker.
  • «Montparnasse 19» was the first film role for a 23-year-old Pierre Richard. He can be seen for a few seconds at the beginning of the movie when Modigliani arrives at the art school and meets Jeanne. Interestingly, Richard's character is initially sitting to the left of a mulatto with a pipe in the back row; then, moments later, when Modigliani sits down next to the mulatto, they appear to be in the penultimate row, while Richard remains in the back row on the right, behind the mulatto's shoulder. Richard would not appear on screen again for another five years.
  • The film depicts Modigliani meeting Jeanne in 1919, yet they actually began living together in 1918 and left for the south in 1918. Additionally, there is no mention of their daughter, Jeanne, who was born in November 1918.
  • Gérard Philipe was nearly 35 years old when he played the 35-year-old Modigliani. Philipe himself died at the age of 36 in Paris, just as Modigliani had, a year and a half after the film's release and three months before the death of director Jacques Becker.
  • The costume designer was Yuri (Georges) Annenkov, a Russian painter and graphic artist, as well as a theater and film designer who worked extensively with Max Ophüls. Annenkov was only five years younger than Modigliani.
