Alphaville

Alphaville is a futuristic city controlled by Alpha 60, a computer that dictates the behaviour and thinking of its inhabitants. Secret agent Lemmy Caution arrives there posing as a journalist, sent to find Professor von Braun, the man behind the machine, and to deal with him. He meets the professor's daughter Natacha and, as he learns how the city works, he begins to teach her about feelings and poetry, things the regime has stripped from everyday life. The film blends science fiction with the detective story, following Caution through a society where logic has replaced emotion.

Jean-Luc Godard directed and wrote the film, the tenth of the twenty-three features he made in chronological order, arriving between Pierrot le Fou and Masculin Féminin. Eddie Constantine plays Lemmy Caution, a character he had portrayed in earlier films, with Anna Karina as Natacha, Akim Tamiroff as Henri Dickson, and small uncredited turns from Jean-Louis Comolli and Michel Delahaye. Shot in Italy and France, it runs 99 minutes.

On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from around 30,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.9 from a much smaller pool of 634. A critics' rating of 8.6 from 52 reviews places it clearly above the audience scores, suggesting that reviewers rate it more highly than general viewers do.
