Corinne and Roland Durand set out from the city for a weekend in the countryside, but the drive turns into an ordeal of endless traffic jams and roadside violence. The couple have their own motives for the trip, and as French bourgeois society comes apart around them, their journey becomes a descent into revolution, murder and cannibalism.
Jean-Luc Godard directed and wrote the film, the fourteenth of the twenty-three features he made, following 2 or 3 Things I Know About Her and preceding The Oldest Profession. Mireille Darc and Jean Yanne play the married couple, with Jean-Pierre Kalfon as the leader of a guerrilla group and small uncredited turns from Yves Afonso, Yves Beneyton and Juliet Berto among a credited cast of twenty-five.
Released at the end of 1967 and running 104 minutes, the film was a French and Italian co-production. It holds a rating of 6.9 on IMDb from around 17,000 votes and the same score on TMDB from just over 300 votes, while critics were considerably warmer, giving it 9 out of 10 across twenty-eight reviews. That gap suggests a film whose formal experiments and political anger have divided general audiences more than professional reviewers.
