Bob Hightower is a vice detective whose ex-wife is murdered and whose daughter is taken by a satanic cult. When the official investigation stalls, he leaves the police force and goes after the group on his own, helped by Case Hardin, the only woman who has managed to escape it. Their search leads them toward the cult's leader, Cyrus. The film is based on the novel by Boston Teran.
Nick Cassavetes directed and wrote the screenplay, working from a large credited cast of 46 and a crew of 53. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau plays Bob, Maika Monroe plays Case, Karl Glusman plays Cyrus, and Jamie Foxx appears as The Ferryman, with January Jones and Paul Johansson in supporting roles. The film runs 155 minutes and was made as a co-production between Mexico and the United States. It is the sixth of the seven features Cassavetes has directed, arriving between The Other Woman and Marked Men: Rule + Shaw, and it is his first film in that run to draw on this kind of crime material.
Critical and audience responses differ. A critics' rating of 4.3/10 from 37 reviews sits below the audience scores of 5.8/10 on IMDb, from around 9,000 votes, and 6.3/10 on TMDB, from roughly 300 votes, indicating that viewers were somewhat more receptive to the film than reviewers were.
