Short description

In a future society controlled by sentient artificial intelligence, a private investigator looks into a murder. His search leads him to a group of rebels with the power to challenge the digital rulers. As the detective explores the case, his own identity begins to unravel and his surroundings descend into a state of hypnotic chaos.

The film was directed by Agnieszka Smoczyńska, following her previous work on The Lure and The Silent Twins. The screenplay was written by Robert Bolesto. The main cast features Andrzej Konopka as Jan 623, Noomi Rapace as Rana, and Reika Kirishima as Ayka, supported by a credited cast of 31 performers.

Produced by companies from Greece, Poland, and Sweden, the production had a budget of 6 million USD. Since its release, the film has received a rating of 4.9/10 on TMDB based on 21 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Reika Kirishima memorized all her lines in English, a language she neither knew nor understood. As a result, her delivery was somewhat mechanical, which, according to director Agnieszka Smoczyńska, perfectly suited her character.
  • To ensure that the futuristic objects on screen looked authentic, production designer Anna Anosovych consulted with specialists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
  • The film was shot on location in Athens, where the ongoing economic crisis had left numerous abandoned buildings and crumbling infrastructure, which the filmmakers felt perfectly embodied their vision of the future.
  • The language barrier meant that Reika Kirishima and Noomi Rapace (who play Aika and Rana, respectively) could not communicate with each other on set. Director Agnieszka Smoczyńska used this circumstance to portray the characters' ability to communicate through what she called telepathy, reflecting a form of non-verbal communication existing in a society united by artificial intelligence.
  • Costume designer Katarzyna Lewińska drew inspiration from the works of Polish sculptor Magdalena Abakanowicz, whose art explored the destruction caused by World War II.
  • Before choosing an abandoned airport, production designer Anna Anosovych had intended to place the refugee camp in the dried-up pools of the Olympic Village in Athens.
