What?

Nancy, a young American travelling through Italy, escapes an attempted assault by three men and takes refuge in a large villa overlooking the Mediterranean. The household mistakes her for a guest and gives her a room, though nobody seems to have expected her. The mansion belongs to Joseph Noblart, a dying Englishman, and its residents are eccentric and self-absorbed, barely registering the new arrival. Among them is Alex, whose attentions to Nancy take an intimate turn.

Roman Polanski directed this comedy, the sixth of the twenty-three features he has made, following Macbeth and preceding Chinatown. He wrote the screenplay with Gérard Brach, and Carlo Ponti produced. Sydne Rome plays Nancy, with Marcello Mastroianni as Alex and Hugh Griffith as Noblart, alongside Guido Alberti, Henning Schlüter and Gianfranco Piacentini. It was a German, Italian and French co-production.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 5.4 from around 5,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.3 from 142 votes, indicating modest and limited audience approval. A critics' rating of 4.4 from thirteen reviews places it lower still, below what viewers gave it. The film remains one of the more lightly regarded entries in Polanski's body of work.
