They/Them

They/Them is a horror film set at Camp Whistler, a conversion therapy camp where parents send their LGBTQ+ teenagers in the hope that a week of programming will change who they are. The camp is run by Owen Whistler, whose rigid rules and psychological methods grow increasingly harsh as the days pass. The campers, who arrived expecting lectures and moralizing, instead find themselves dealing with something more brutal, and they must rely on one another to get through it. Their situation becomes more dangerous still when a masked killer begins targeting people around the camp.

The film was directed and written by John Logan, marking his feature directorial debut after a long career as a screenwriter, and was produced by Michael Aguilar and Jason Blum for Blumhouse Productions. Kevin Bacon plays Owen Whistler, with Theo Germaine as Jordan leading a young ensemble that includes Quei Tann, Austin Crute, Monique Kim and Anna Lore.

Released in July 2022, the film runs 104 minutes. Reception has been weak across the board: it holds a 4/10 from around 14,000 votes on IMDb and a 4.7/10 from roughly 263 votes on TMDB, while a critics' rating of 4.8/10 from 74 reviews places professional opinion close to the audience scores, with little sign of the divide that sometimes separates the two.
