The Quiet American

In 1952 Saigon, as Vietnamese forces fight for independence from French colonial rule, a veteran British correspondent named Thomas Fowler has settled into a comfortable life, with a young Vietnamese woman, Phuong, at his side. The arrival of Alden Pyle, an idealistic young American on a humanitarian mission, disturbs that arrangement: Pyle befriends Fowler, then falls in love with Phuong, turning the two men into rivals. Fowler, who has grown weary of the local political intrigue, begins to look more closely at what his new acquaintance is really doing in the country, and the contest between them takes on a sharper edge.

Phillip Noyce directed this adaptation of Graham Greene's novel, which had previously been filmed in 1958. Christopher Hampton and Robert Schenkkan wrote the screenplay. Michael Caine plays Fowler, Brendan Fraser plays Pyle, and Đỗ Thị Hải Yến plays Phuong, with supporting turns from Tzi Ma, Rade Šerbedžija and Robert Stanton. The film came between Noyce's Rabbit-Proof Fence and Catch a Fire, the tenth of the sixteen features he has directed.

Made for a budget of about 30 million dollars, the film took in roughly 28 million dollars worldwide. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.5 out of 10 from 343 votes.
