What's left behind the scenes
- The role of Sonny Crockett was originally intended for Tom Cruise, who had worked with Michael Mann on "The Insider." Ultimately, the role went to Colin Farrell.
- Edward James Olmos, who played Lieutenant Castillo in the original television series, was offered the same role in the feature film, but he declined.
- Jan Hammer (the composer of the series) was asked to write several versions of the soundtrack, but the composer rejected the offer. At the time, the soundtrack to the original series topped the charts for 11 weeks.
- The costume design for Jamie Foxx's character (Tubbs) was created by renowned fashion designer Oswald Boateng. Boateng had previously worked with Jamie, which is why director Michael Mann asked him to assist with the film.
- Filming was suspended for three days after gunshots rang out near the set in the Dominican Republic on October 24, 2005.
- RZA was originally supposed to compose the music for the film.

- The plane Sonny and Ricardo use to transport drugs is an Adam Aircraft A500.
- Crockett and Tubbs use the following boats to transport drugs from a freighter to Miami: Donzi 38 ZR, Donzi 43 ZR, Donzi 38 ZF Daytona.
- The newspaper Mendoza is reading is the Spanish newspaper «El Mundo».
- Naomi Harris filmed «Miami Vice» and «Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest» (2006) simultaneously.
- The location of Atlantis in Uruguay was chosen for filming scenes in Isabella's uncle's house. The scene outside the Geneva bank was filmed in the Old City of Montevideo, Uruguay.
- During the conversation between Croquette and Tabbs with Agent Fujima, the latter says: "What does this have to do with the price of tea in China?" Russell Crowe says the exact same phrase in Michael Mann's film "The Insider" (1998).
