Miami Vice follows two undercover detectives, Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs, working in South Florida. When a leak from high up leads to the killing of federal agents and an informant's family, the pair are drawn into an investigation that reaches a global drug-trafficking network and a white-supremacist group tied to it. Posing as transporters of illegal cargo, they try to work their way toward the people behind the operation. The case becomes personal for both men: Crockett, who does things his own way, becomes involved with Isabella, the Chinese-Cuban wife of an arms and drug trafficker, while Tubbs faces a threat to someone close to him. What begins as a professional assignment increasingly puts the two partners and those around them at risk.
Michael Mann directed and wrote the screenplay, and produced with Pieter Jan Brugge. The film sits between Collateral and Public Enemies in the list of features he has directed. Colin Farrell plays Crockett and Jamie Foxx plays Tubbs, with Naomie Harris as Trudy Joplin, Gong Li as Isabella, John Ortiz as José Yero and Ciarán Hinds as FBI Agent John Fujima. The production was large, with 72 credited cast members and 220 credited crew.
Released in July 2006, the film had a budget of 135 million US dollars and took about 164 million US dollars worldwide, a modest return against its cost. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6 out of 10 from 2,065 votes, while the film critics' rating stands at 5.7 out of 10 from 226 reviews, placing the two broadly in the same range.
