Short description

Sam Wilson has taken up the mantle of Captain America, and his first major assignment brings him face to face with newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross. The meeting goes badly, and Sam is drawn into an international incident that leaves him racing to uncover the purpose behind a global conspiracy before the person behind it succeeds in turning the world against itself.

The film is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and continues the story of Sam Wilson, who inherited the shield in earlier Marvel productions. Anthony Mackie leads the cast, with Harrison Ford appearing as President Ross, part of a large ensemble that also includes Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Tim Blake Nelson and Carl Lumbly. Julius Onah directed and shares screenplay credit with Dalan Musson and Malcolm Spellman; it followed his earlier features The Cloverfield Paradox and Luce, making it the third film he directed. Kevin Feige and Nate Moore produced for Marvel Studios.

Released in February 2025, the film cost about 180 million dollars to make and took in roughly 415 million dollars worldwide, a modest return relative to its budget. Audience response was mixed to lukewarm: on IMDb it holds 5.6 out of 10 from around 179,000 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 6 out of 10 from a much smaller pool of voters. A critics' rating of 5.4 out of 10 from 367 reviews places professional opinion close to the audience scores, with neither group rating it highly.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film's finale takes place in Washington. Director and screenwriter Julius Onah remembered the cherry blossoms from a young age, as he lived in Arlington, Virginia, near Washington during his childhood. He associates the blooming cherry trees with empathy, as the Washington cherry trees are a gift from Japan to the United States and symbolize friendship between the two countries.
