Short description
David Rice is a young man who discovers he has the ability to teleport anywhere in the world in an instant. He uses this gift to escape his unhappy home life, travel freely and fund a comfortable existence by taking money from bank vaults. His carefree life changes when he meets Griffin, another person with the same ability, and learns that he is not unique. The two are among a line of people known as Jumpers, and a secret organization has spent centuries hunting them down. David finds himself targeted by Roland, a determined operative of that group, while also trying to protect Millie Harris, a woman from his past.
Doug Liman directed the film, the fifth of fourteen features he has directed in chronological order, arriving between Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Fair Game. The screenplay is credited to David S. Goyer, Jim Uhls and Simon Kinberg, with Arnon Milchan, Simon Kinberg and Lucas Foster producing. Hayden Christensen plays David, Jamie Bell plays Griffin, Samuel L. Jackson plays Roland, and Rachel Bilson plays Millie, with Michael Rooker and Diane Lane as David's parents. The production, made in the United States and Canada, cost about 85 million dollars and took in roughly 222 million dollars worldwide.
Audience responses were moderate: on IMDb the film holds 6.1 out of 10 from around 337,000 votes, and on TMDB it holds 6.2 out of 10 from over 6,400 votes. A film critics' rating of 4.3 out of 10 from 167 reviews places it noticeably below those viewer scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The main role in the film was originally intended for Tom Sturridge. It wasn't until August 2006, when work on the film was already in full swing, that the studio executives insisted on replacing him with a more well-known actor. As a result, two weeks before the start of filming, Hayden Christensen was invited, and Eminem was seriously considered as another possible option for the role, but director Doug Liman, after the first meeting, preferred Christensen and insisted on his candidacy.
- The role of Millie could have gone to Evan Rachel Wood, who declined the offer. In April 2006, it was announced that Millie would be played by 20-year-old Australian actress Teresa Palmer, but in October of the same year, a month after filming began, she was replaced by 25-year-old Rachel Bilson.
- After lengthy negotiations, the film's producers obtained permission to shoot in the Roman Colosseum for three days (December 13-15, 2006), which had been achieved by very few before. The film crew was given extremely strict conditions: nothing of the equipment or decorations should touch the ground, the use of artificial lighting was strictly prohibited, and only four hours were allocated for work (from 8:30 to 10:30 and from 3:30 to 5:30 PM). Many tourists didn't even realize that filming was taking place and, unknowingly, were used as extras.
- Work on the film was marred by a series of accidents, one of which was fatal. On January 25, 2007, set decorator David Ritchie died on set in Toronto when a chunk of frozen sand and soil collapsed on him while he and three other workers were dismantling exterior sets in difficult weather conditions.
- Director Doug Liman insisted that most of the stunts be performed by Hayden Christensen himself, without the use of trained stunt doubles. This decision proved costly for the actor, who suffered a deep cut to his hand, and one fight scene with Samuel Jackson resulted in a serious ear injury. Additionally, one of his pupils became severely dilated, requiring the use of special eye drops during filming, and the actor had to seek medical attention at a nearby hospital.
- The opening scenes of the film, and several subsequent ones, take place in the small town of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Filming took place in February 2007 at Huron High School and its surroundings, and 60 local teenagers were invited as extras. Later, after the need arose to reshoot additional footage, the film crew returned to Ann Arbor for one day in September 2007, allowing another 20 teenagers to participate in the project.
- When David and Griffin enter a combat zone, the soldiers around them speak Russian, ostensibly Russian military equipment is moving, and the license plate Х049AР reg 95 RUS (region 95 – the Chechen Republic) is visible on a burned-out bus.
- When a note with a list of cities Millie wants to visit appears on screen at the 2-minute mark of the film, you can notice that the name of Prague is misspelled – Prauge instead of Prague.
- At the 4th minute of the film, when David picks up a discarded New Year's ball on the ice, he is wearing a yellow backpack. When he falls through the ice, the backpack disappears.
- At the 7th minute of the film, when Millie goes outside, the river in the background is completely ice-free. However, in one of the previous scenes, David walked onto the ice, and the river was covered in ice from bank to bank.
- At the 18th minute of the film, David is sitting on a white surfboard with blue accents. In the next scene, he is riding the waves on a yellow board.
- At the 28th minute of the film, Mark puts his hand on David's shoulder, but in the next frame, they are simply standing next to each other.
- At the 30th minute, while David and Millie are talking in the bar, you can notice in the background a girl in a red blouse looking at the camera and the film crew.
- At the 37th minute of the film, while Griffin is sitting on the roof, a film crew and a camera dolly moving along tracks can be noticed below, in front of the Colosseum.
- At the 41st minute of the film, Griffin holds a bat in his left hand and raises a fragment of a statue with his right. When he teleports and appears in front of David, the bat is already in his right hand, and the fragment disappears. When Griffin teleports closer to David a second later, he throws the statue fragment with his right hand.
- At the 52nd minute of the film, Griffin is holding an Xbox game controller and playing the video game Halo, which was an Xbox exclusive, but in one of the following shots he is flipping through game discs for the PlayStation 2 console.
- At the 58th minute of the film, David teleports to Tokyo, and wet marks are clearly visible on his clothes. As he walks down the street and through the underground passage after Griffin, the marks disappear. When, a minute later, David is near Griffin by the pedestrian crossing, the water droplet marks reappear on David's clothes.
- At the 63rd minute of the film, holes are clearly visible on David's sweater. When he teleports to the bar where Millie works, the sweater is already intact.
- At the 71st minute of the film, when Griffin teleports the bus to Roland, you can notice a mannequin is driving.
- At the 74th minute of the film, the fight between David and Griffin begins at night in Egypt. When they teleport together to the top of the pyramid a few seconds later, it is already daytime in the shot.
- At the 76th minute of the film, Griffin teleports a car with the driver inside. When he kicks the door open and climbs out in the next shot, the driver has disappeared.
- At the 78th minute of the film, David draws his knife and throws the sheath aside. When he teleports to the house where Millie is being held and dodges a passing car, the knife is back in its sheath.
- At the 78th minute of the film, David teleports onto a balcony, and from the outside it is visible that the window curtains are completely lowered. When he looks through the window in the next shot, the roller blinds are already slightly raised. In the following scene, David moves into the room to free Millie, and he is attacked by the Paladin, who enters the room from the balcony, although no one was there before.
- The film is based on Steven Gould’s novel "Jumper" (1992).
- When Griffin said, "...one madman wanted to teleport a building...he died while moving it...but he did shake the building up," the authors were referring to Nikola Tesla.
