Harold and the Purple Crayon follows its title character, who begins as a boy living inside a book, where anything he draws with his purple crayon becomes real. Once grown, he draws a door out of the book and steps into the physical world, only to find that everyday life works very differently from the pages he came from. When his crayon and the unlimited imagination it carries fall into the wrong hands, Harold and the friends he makes must use their combined creativity to protect both the world he left behind and the one he has just entered.
The film adapts Crockett Johnson's 1955 children's book and was directed by Carlos Saldanha, arriving in 2024 after a run of animated features that includes the two Rio films and Ferdinand. Zachary Levi plays Harold, with Lil Rel Howery, Zooey Deschanel, Benjamin Bottani, Tanya Reynolds and Jemaine Clement among the cast. David Guion and Michael Handelman wrote the screenplay, and John Davis produced.
Released in July 2024, the film runs 90 minutes and mixes adventure, comedy, family and fantasy. Made for a reported 40 million dollars, it returned roughly 32 million worldwide, a shortfall against its budget. On IMDb it holds 5.7 from around 10,000 votes; on TMDB it sits at 6.5 from 391 votes. A critics' rating of 4.3 from 75 reviews places it below the audience scores.
