Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar follows Nathan Explosion, frontman of the fictional death metal band Dethklok, in the aftermath of Toki Wartooth's rescue. Struggling personally and professionally, Nathan learns that a catastrophic celestial event is approaching Earth, and he is expected to fulfil a prophecy by composing the Song of Salvation to save the planet. To do so, he must overcome his damaged ego, hold his band together, and confront the evil Salacia. The film serves as a continuation of the Metalocalypse animated series, drawing on its characters and long-running storylines.
Brendon Small directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Tommy Blacha, and also voices several roles, including Nathan, Pickles, Skwisgaar and Charles. Tommy Blacha voices William Murderface and Toki Wartooth, with Victor Brandt as General Crozier and King Diamond as Priest among the supporting cast. The production involved Williams Street and Titmouse, with Laura Allen producing and 108 crew members credited. At 83 minutes, it is a feature-length extension of the series rather than a standalone story.
Released on 22 August 2023, the film received a moderate reception. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.4 from around 1,500 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.6 from a much smaller base of about 70 votes. The two figures sit close together, suggesting a generally similar response from the audiences who have seen it, with the larger IMDb sample giving the more stable picture.
