An Affair to Remember

Two people meet while travelling across the Atlantic and fall for each other even though both are already committed to other people. He is Nickie Ferrante, a charming man with a international reputation, and she is Terry McKay, a nightclub singer. Before leaving the ship they agree to test whether what they feel is real: they will separate for six months and, if the feeling lasts, meet at the top of the Empire State Building in New York. They part at the harbour, each returning to the life waiting for them, and the months that follow decide whether the appointment is kept.

Leo McCarey directed the film, working from a screenplay he wrote with Donald Ogden Stewart and Delmer Daves, and Jerry Wald produced it for 20th Century Fox. The film stands sixth in the directing credits listed here, arriving after Young Oldfield, Duck Soup, The Awful Truth, Love Affair and Good Sam. Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr lead the cast, with Richard Denning, Neva Patterson, Cathleen Nesbitt and Robert Q. Lewis among the 89 credited performers.

Made for about two million dollars, the film returned roughly four million worldwide. Audiences have rated it 7.4 out of 10 on IMDb across some 36,000 votes and 7.4 out of 10 on TMDB, while the critics' score stands lower at 6.6 out of 10 from 34 reviews, so viewers have been warmer towards it than reviewers were.
