Short description
A wealthy Korean family living in Los Angeles is troubled by a series of supernatural events, and a shaman named Lee Hwa-rim traces the cause to a dark presence tied to one of their ancestors. To put the spirit to rest, she and her apprentice Yoon Bong-gil enlist a geomancer, Kim Sang-duk, and a funeral director, Ko Young-geun. Their search leads them to a secluded grave site in the Korean countryside, where the remains are exhumed and moved. Something far older and more dangerous is stirred by the disturbance, and the team finds itself facing consequences that reach well beyond the family they were hired to help.
Jang Jae-hyun wrote and directed the film, his third feature after The Priests and Svaha: The Sixth Finger. Choi Min-sik plays Sang-duk, with Kim Go-eun as Hwa-rim, Yoo Hae-jin as Young-geun and Lee Do-hyun as Bong-gil, among a credited cast of 43. Made for about 11 million USD, it earned close to 94 million USD worldwide, a strong return on its budget. It holds a 6.9 rating on IMDb from more than thirty thousand votes and a 7.7 on TMDB from a smaller base, while a film critics' rating of 7.6 from 45 reviews places it slightly above the IMDb audience figure and close to the TMDB one.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film became the highest-grossing horror film in South Korea, breaking the record previously held by "Train to Busan".
- The numbers on the license plates of the main characters' cars relate to Korean history. 19 0301 is a reference to the March 1st Movement against Japanese rule, which was named after the incident of March 1, 1919; 49 0815 refers to Korea's Independence Day, which was established on August 15, 1949. The hearse has the number 1945 – the year World War II ended, and Korea was liberated from Japanese occupation.
- The film's title can be translated as "Ripple" or "Echo".
- On one of the posters, the silhouette of the sky replicates the outline of the Korean Peninsula.
- Filming period – from October 16, 2022, to March 1, 2023.
- All the shamanic rituals shown in the film are as realistic as possible. Because of this, actress Kim Go-eun was afraid that a spirit might possess her.
- The demonic samurai rips out his victims’ livers from the left side. Usually, the liver is located on the right side of the human body.
- The four main characters (Choi Min-shik, Kim Go-eun, Yoo Hae-jin, and Lee Do-hyun), as well as two assistant shamans (Kim Sun-young and Kim Ji-an), bear the names of Korean independence fighters, while the mother of the American family (Lee Young-nan) shares the name of a pro-Japanese official and informant.
