Short description

Set in Manhattan during the 1980s, the story follows a lonely dog who seeks companionship by acquiring a robot. The two quickly form a deep bond, exploring the city together. However, their friendship is tested during a summer trip to the beach, where a mechanical failure leaves the robot immobilized in the sand. Unable to find an immediate solution, the dog is forced to leave his friend behind, leading both characters to seek new ways to handle their solitude.

This animated production was written and directed by Pablo Berger, following his 2003 film Torremolinos 73. The voice cast includes Ivan Labanda, who provides the voices for both Dog and Robot, alongside Graciela Molina and several other performers. A co-production between Spain, France, and the United States, the film was produced by companies including NEON and Noodles Production.

The movie had a budget of 5 million USD and earned an equal amount at the worldwide box office. It has been well received by viewers, holding a 7.6 rating on IMDb from 24,000 votes and an 8/10 on TMDB based on 847 votes. Film critics gave the movie an 8.4 rating from 140 reviews, which is slightly higher than the scores provided by general audiences.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Both the dog and the robot are voiced by Ivan Labanda. There are no lines in the cartoon, and Labanda simply makes various sounds.
  • In the taxi stop scene, the driver and passenger are anthropomorphic animals based on Robert De Niro's and Martin Scorsese's characters from Scorsese's thriller Taxi Driver (1976).
