Fanny

Fanny is a romantic drama set in the port of Marseille, where Marius, a young man approaching nineteen, feels trapped by the life his café-owning father has laid out for him. He dreams of going to sea, and on the eve of a five-year voyage, Fanny, a girl he has known since childhood, tells him she loves him. He realizes his feelings for her run just as deep, leaving both of them torn between his longing for adventure and the life they could share ashore.

The film was directed and produced by Joshua Logan, working from a screenplay by Julius J. Epstein. It followed several earlier Logan pictures, including Picnic, Bus Stop, Sayonara and South Pacific, and it came before Ensign Pulver and Camelot. Leslie Caron plays Fanny, with Horst Buchholz as Marius, Maurice Chevalier as Panisse, Charles Boyer as Cesar, Georgette Anys as Fanny's mother Honorine, and Salvatore Baccaloni as the ferryboat captain Escartifique.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.8 from around 2,900 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 6.7 from a much smaller pool of 46 votes. A critics' rating of 5.9 from five reviews places it slightly below those audience scores. Running 133 minutes, it was released in the United States in June 1961.
