The Beasts

Antoine and Olga, a French couple, have settled in a small village in inland Galicia, where they farm in an environmentally conscious way and restore abandoned houses in the hope of bringing people back to the area. Their life there is strained by the suspicion of local farmers who see little future in the land, and the friction sharpens when the couple opposes a wind turbine project, setting them against neighbours including the brothers Xan and Lorenzo. What begins as disagreement between people with different ideas about the countryside develops into open hostility.

Rodrigo Sorogoyen directed and co-wrote the film with Isabel Peña, following his earlier features May God Save Us and The Realm; his later films, in chronological order, are Los años nuevos and The Beloved. Marina Foïs and Denis Ménochet play Olga and Antoine, with Luis Zahera and Diego Anido as Xan and Lorenzo, among a credited cast of 41. Made for about 4 million dollars, the film took roughly 10 million dollars worldwide.

It holds a rating of 7.5 out of 10 on IMDb from around 25,000 votes and the same score on TMDB from a much smaller number of votes, while the critics' rating stands at 8.5 out of 10 from 70 reviews, placing critical approval above the general audience response.
