A man breaks into the empty vacation estate of a wealthy technology executive, intending to rob it while no one is home. His plan collapses when the executive and his wife arrive unexpectedly, forcing him to improvise. The intruder takes the couple hostage inside their own property, and the standoff that follows turns into a tense contest of nerves and privilege between strangers with nothing in common.
Charlie McDowell directed the crime thriller Windfall, working from a screenplay by Andrew Kevin Walker and Justin Lader. It is his third feature, following The One I Love and The Discovery, and it precedes his 2025 film The Summer Book. Jason Segel, who also produced, plays the intruder, credited only as Nobody, while Jesse Plemons and Lily Collins appear as the executive and his wife, and Omar Leyva plays a gardener. The film runs 93 minutes.
Windfall received a film critics' rating of 5.8/10 from 81 reviews, close to the audience scores of 5.7/10 on IMDb from roughly 29,000 votes and 5.5/10 on TMDB from a smaller pool of around 500. The narrow gap between critics and viewers points to a moderately received release rather than a sharply divisive one, with both groups landing near the middle of the scale.
