The Final Countdown

The USS Nimitz, a modern American aircraft carrier, is conducting routine manoeuvres near Hawaii in 1980 when it encounters an unusual storm. When the weather clears, the ship and its crew find that radio signals are picking up broadcasts from decades earlier, and they gradually realise the storm has carried them back to 7 December 1941, the day of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. With the Nimitz's advanced aircraft and weaponry at hand, Captain Matthew Yelland faces a decision about whether to intervene in the attack and change the course of history.

Don Taylor directed the film, which sits between Damien - Omen II and Classified Love in a directing career that also included Escape from the Planet of the Apes and The Island of Dr. Moreau. The screenplay was written by David Ambrose, Thomas Hunter and Peter Powell, and Peter Douglas produced. Kirk Douglas plays Captain Yelland, with Martin Sheen as Warren Lasky, Katharine Ross as Laurel Scott, James Farentino as Wing Commander Richard T. Owens, Ron O'Neal as Commander Dan Thurman and Charles Durning as Senator Samuel Chapman. It runs 103 minutes and was made for about 12 million USD, taking roughly 17 million USD worldwide.
