Short description

Set in Detroit during the 1970s, Motor City follows John Miller, a working-class man who falls in love with the girlfriend of a local crime boss. After the gangster frames him for a crime he did not commit, Miller is sent to prison. Upon his release, he seeks revenge against the man who destroyed his life and separated him from the woman he loves.

Directed by Potsy Ponciroli, this film is the third project in the director's career, following Old Henry and Greedy People. The screenplay was written by Chad St. John. The movie stars Alan Ritchson as John Miller, alongside Ben Foster, Shailene Woodley, Lionel Boyce, Amar Chadha-Patel, and Pablo Schreiber. The production involved a credited cast of 28 people and a crew of 161.

The film had a budget of 30 million USD but earned 3 million USD at the worldwide box office. Audiences have given the movie a moderate reception, with a rating of 6.2/10 on IMDb from 1,684 votes and a matching score of 6.2/10 on TMDB from 116 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Director Potsi Ponciroli initially intended to film the movie with almost no dialogue, focusing instead on the expressiveness of the acting, the musical score, and the cinematography. According to producer Greg Silverman, the goal was to create a self-sufficient visual narrative that would allow viewers in any country, regardless of language or culture, to understand and feel the twists and turns of the plot.
  • Alan Ritchson (who played the protagonist, auto plant worker John Miller) was given a special dental prosthetic that slightly altered the shape of the actor's face. Several wigs were also created; the protagonist's use of these wigs symbolized the passage of time and changes in his mood and emotional state. Ritchson wanted to keep the wigs after filming ended, but he was not allowed to.
