- Rooney Mara and Mia Wasikowska were offered the lead female role, but both declined. Ultimately, Elizabeth Olsen received the role.
- Will Smith and Daniel Craig were considered for the lead male role at different times, but both turned it down. Josh Brolin was eventually cast in the role.
- Christian Bale, Colin Firth, and Clive Owen were considered for the role of the main antagonist, but none agreed. Ultimately, the role went to Charlto Copley.
- Lily Collins auditioned for the role.
- Josh Brolin, who played the lead role, wrote an email to the director of the original film, Park Chan-wook, and asked for his blessing to appear in the film.
