Short description
A stuntman named Mike struggles with his reputation and his relationship with his partner, Jane. After a car accident during a film shoot on their wedding day leads to a hospital stay and a rift between the couple, Mike seeks to reconcile with Jane by finding her a role in a new production. In this project, Mike serves as the double for a famous action star who is his physical lookalike but lacks the courage required for the role's dangerous stunts.
Directed by Claude Zidi, this French comedy followed his 1976 film The Wing or the Thigh? and preceded The Discord in 1978. The movie features a screenplay by Michel Audiard and was produced by Jean-Paul Belmondo, Christian Fechner, and René Malo. The main cast includes Jean-Paul Belmondo, who plays both the stuntman and the actor, and Raquel Welch. Along with the leads, the credited cast consists of 53 performers, including Dany Saval, Charles Gérard, Raymond Gérôme, and Julien Guiomar.
The film received a generally positive response from audiences. It holds a rating of 6.5/10 on IMDb based on 3,600 votes and a rating of 6/10 on TMDB from 134 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- It ranks 42nd in attendance among foreign films in Soviet cinema distribution.
- Most of the stunts in the film were performed by Belmondo himself. This cost him numerous injuries: an ankle sprain after the scene on the steps of Sacré-Cœur, a dislocation and penetrating wound after the scene of rolling down the stairs, a bitten ear after the fight scene with the tiger. Since insurance companies refused to insure the aviation stunts, they had to be filmed last. Everything went without incident, and the actor was able to fulfill his childhood dream – to stand on the wing of a flying plane.
