Coffee and Cigarettes is a collection of eleven short vignettes made by Jim Jarmusch, who also wrote the screenplay. Each segment places a small group of people at a table, where they drink coffee, smoke cigarettes and talk. The conversations drift across subjects such as English tea preparation, conspiracy theories about Elvis Presley, Abbott and Costello, a fictional rock band, Paris in the 1920s and nicotine as an insecticide. Some segments pair performers who play versions of themselves or relatives of themselves, as with Cate Blanchett's dual role as a film star and her cousin.
The project began in the 1980s with a short film of the same name and was completed years later. It is the eighth of fourteen features Jarmusch has directed in chronological order, arriving after Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai and before Broken Flowers. The cast of twenty-seven credited performers includes Roberto Benigni, Steven Wright, Joie and Cinqué Lee, Steve Buscemi, Iggy Pop and Tom Waits. Jason Kliot, Joana Vicente and Rudd Simmons produced the film, which was made in Italy, the United States and Japan and took about 8 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from around 71,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.9 out of 10 from roughly 1,100 votes, showing a modest gap between the two audiences. A critics' rating of 6.4 out of 10 from 122 reviews places it slightly below both audience scores.
