Rang De Basanti follows a group of friends who have recently finished university in Delhi and drift through their days with little sense of purpose. A young British filmmaker, Sue McKinley, arrives in India to make a film based on her grandfather's diary, which recounts the lives of revolutionaries who fought against British colonial rule. She casts these former students in the production because she cannot afford professional actors.
At first the friends treat the project lightly, but as they engage with the roles they are playing, the story of the freedom fighters begins to shape how they see their own country. The film moves between this colonial past and the present day, and the group comes to recognise parallels between the struggles of an earlier generation and the problems they face themselves.
Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra directed and co-wrote the film, which was produced by UTV Motion Pictures and released in January 2006. The cast is led by Aamir Khan as DJ, alongside Siddharth, Kunal Kapoor, Sharman Joshi, Atul Kulkarni and Alice Patten. Made for about 2 million dollars, it took roughly 12 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 7.8 from nine reviews, while on TMDB users rate it 7.1 from 528 votes.
