Short description
Maddie Barker is a rideshare driver in Montauk, New York, struggling to hold on to the house she grew up in. With her car impounded and her finances collapsing, she answers an unusual Craigslist ad placed by a wealthy couple: Allison and Laird Becker want someone to date their shy, socially awkward nineteen-year-old son, Percy, and bring him out of his shell before he leaves for college. Maddie takes the job expecting easy money, but Percy proves far harder to win over than she anticipated, and the arrangement grows more complicated for both of them as the summer goes on.
Gene Stupnitsky directed and co-wrote the film with John Phillips, following his 2019 debut Good Boys; it is the second feature he has directed. Jennifer Lawrence stars as Maddie and also produced through Excellent Cadaver, alongside Justine Ciarrocchi and Alex Saks. Andrew Barth Feldman plays Percy, with Laura Benanti, Matthew Broderick, Natalie Morales and Scott MacArthur in supporting roles.
Released in June 2023 by Columbia Pictures, the comedy was made for about 45 million dollars and grossed roughly 83 million worldwide. It holds a 6.3 rating on IMDb from around 214,000 votes and a 6.7 on TMDB from about 4,050 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 6.1 from 229 reviews, indicating a broadly middling reception across critics and audiences alike.
What's left behind the scenes
- When critics pointed out the 13-year age difference between the two main characters in the film, director and screenwriter Gene Stupnitsky immediately stated that the age difference between the main characters in “Silver Linings Playbook” (David O. Russell, 2012), starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, is 15 years, but no one paid attention to it.
- According to Jennifer Lawrence, she was relentlessly questioned about whether she actually intended to film nude in combat scenes on the beach (she was harassed after already agreeing to it). The filming took two days, and throughout that time, Lawrence remained on the beach nude, fighting both men and women in front of the entire film crew.
- The plot idea originated from an ad on Craigslist that producers Mark Provissiero and Naomi Odenkirk once saw and immediately forwarded to director and screenwriter Gene Stupnitsky. Provissiero told Jennifer Lawrence about it and offered her the lead role, which she accepted.
