Metro
Short description
Metro is an action crime film set in San Francisco, where Scott Roper works as a police hostage negotiator known for talking his way through dangerous standoffs. His routine is disrupted when Michael Korda, a jewel thief and killer, enters the picture and takes the life of Roper's friend and colleague. Alongside Kevin McCall, a sharpshooter assigned as his new partner and possible successor, Roper pursues Korda and manages to put him behind bars. Korda escapes custody, however, and turns his attention to the people closest to Roper, drawing the negotiator into a personal confrontation with a calculating adversary.
Thomas Carter directed the film, the second in the chronological list of his features after Swing Kids and before Save the Last Dance. Randy Feldman wrote the screenplay, and Roger Birnbaum produced it for Touchstone Pictures and Caravan Pictures. Eddie Murphy leads as Inspector Scott Roper, with Michael Rapaport as Kevin McCall, Art Evans as Lieutenant Sam Baffett, Kim Miyori, James Carpenter and Donal Logue among the credited cast of thirty-two, backed by a crew of 122.
Released in January 1997, Metro runs 117 minutes and mixes action and comedy with crime and thriller elements. Made for a budget of 55 million dollars, it returned about 32 million dollars worldwide. On TMDB it holds a rating of 5.7 from 633 votes, while film critics rated it 4.1 from 35 reviews, a lower figure than the audience response.
What's left behind the scenes
- The finale, which supposedly takes place in Tahiti, was filmed on a beach in one of the coastal towns of California, 50 kilometers south of San Francisco, where the film's action unfolded and where it was shot.
- The horse race scene mentions someone named Russell. This is Russell Baze, the most successful jockey in the history of thoroughbred horse racing, inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame.
- In the opening hostage scene, Roper is shown wearing a v-neck sweater over a t-shirt. After that, the t-shirt sometimes disappears and then reappears.
- Veronika nearly suffocated to death. A week later, she's flaunting a low-cut dress, and there are no marks on her neck.
