Benicio Del Toro invited Ryan Gosling to play Benigno Ben Ramirez. In preparation for the role, he learned several phrases in Spanish and met the real Ramirez. However, due to constant postponements of the start of filming, Gosling left the project.
The first feature film shot on the Red One Digital Camera, and the first mainstream film shot in 4K resolution. (In fact, the first part was also shot with this camera, but it was filmed after the second part so that Benicio Del Toro could shave off a beard he hadn't worn in the first part.)
Lou Diamond Phillips spent a lot of time with linguists learning his lines in Spanish. Upon arriving on set, the actor discovered that his role had been almost completely rewritten and that he needed to learn new lines.
