Home from the Hill is set in a Texas town, where Captain Wade Hunnicutt is the wealthiest and most powerful resident. His marriage to Hannah has broken down, partly because of his long-standing infidelities. Hannah has raised their son Theron to depend on her, but as the boy grows older Wade insists on taking charge of his upbringing, enlisting his employee Rafe to help turn Theron into a man. Theron's introduction to hunting and to a wider world brings him into contact with family secrets he had not known, and the tensions between his parents shape his own romance with Libby Halstead, whose father disapproves of the match.
The film was directed by Vincente Minnelli, the thirteenth of the fourteen features he made in chronological order, arriving between Gigi and The Courtship of Eddie's Father. Irving Ravetch and Harriet Frank Jr. wrote the screenplay, and Edmund Grainger produced it for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Robert Mitchum plays Wade, with Eleanor Parker as Hannah, George Peppard as Rafe, George Hamilton as Theron, Everett Sloane as Albert Halstead and Luana Patten as Libby, among a credited cast of thirty-two. Made for about two million dollars, it returned roughly three million worldwide.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.4 from around 4,200 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.9 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 8.2 from ten reviews places professional assessment higher than the audience scores.
