Harry and the Hendersons
Short description
The Henderson family is driving home from a hunting trip when their car strikes a large, hairy creature on a forest road. Fearing at first that they have hit a person, they discover the body belongs to a Bigfoot, and George Henderson decides to bring it back with them rather than leave it behind. The creature is not dead, and once it wakes in their home it turns the household upside down, smashing doorways to fit its height and emptying the family's lives of any routine. What the Hendersons expected to be a ferocious monster turns out to be a gentle giant, and they come to care for him while their neighbours' discovery of the unusual guest sets off a hunt for the creature.
William Dear directed and co-wrote the film with Ezra D. Rappaport and Bill Martin, and produced it with Richard Vane. It followed his work on the television series Amazing Stories and came before If Looks Could Kill (1991), Angels in the Outfield (1994) and later titles. John Lithgow and Melinda Dillon play George and Nancy Henderson, with Margaret Langrick and Joshua Rudoy as their children, Kevin Peter Hall as the creature Harry, and Don Ameche as Dr. Wallace Wrightwood. Made for about 10 million dollars, it took roughly 50 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.1/10 from around 41,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.1/10 from some 770 votes, while critics' reviews averaged 5.1/10.
What's left behind the scenes
- Kevin Peter Hall (1955-1991) was 218 cm tall, and in the Harry costume, he reached 243 cm.
- Before the film's release, its creators preferred to keep Harry a secret – he was only shown fleetingly in promotional materials and trailers. This is precisely why the film was not more successful (the fact that the 'star' is a Bigfoot was not emphasized in the advertising campaign).
- According to special effects supervisor Rick Baker, he was guided by images of orangutans when creating Harry's image – and especially his beard.
