Short description
Just Like Heaven is a romantic fantasy comedy about David Abbott, a man who moves into an apartment in San Francisco and soon finds he is not alone there. A young woman named Elizabeth Masterson appears in his home, insists the place belongs to her, and then vanishes before his eyes. She keeps coming and going as she pleases, and while David becomes convinced she is a ghost, Elizabeth is equally certain that she is still alive. Working out what has actually happened to her becomes the way the two grow close, and it also becomes the condition for anything real between them.
The film was directed by Mark Waters, the fourth of the fifteen features he has directed to date, arriving between Mean Girls and The Spiderwick Chronicles. Leslie Dixon and Peter Tolan wrote the screenplay, and Walter F. Parkes, Laurie MacDonald and Marc Levy produced it for DreamWorks Pictures. Reese Witherspoon plays Dr. Elizabeth Masterson and Mark Ruffalo plays David Abbott, with Donal Logue, Dina Spybey-Waters, Ben Shenkman and Jon Heder among the supporting cast.
Released in September 2005, the film runs 95 minutes and cost about 58 million dollars, returning roughly 103 million worldwide. It holds a 6.7 rating on IMDb from 125,000 votes and a 7 on TMDB from 2,645 votes. The critics' rating stands at 5.8 from 149 reviews, below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film is based on the novel by Marc Levy, 'What If It Were True?' (Et si c'etait vrai, 2000).
- Steven Spielberg paid Marc Levy two million dollars for the film rights to the novel.
- After one of the unsuccessful takes, Mark Ruffalo jokingly jumped out the window on set. It wasn't a great height, and he landed on his feet safely, but he terribly frightened the entire film crew.
- At times during filming and rehearsals, at the director Mark Waters' instruction, actor Mark Ruffalo wore an earpiece, and his lines were fed to him by Reese Witherspoon, who was not present on set. This was done to help the actor feel more comfortable in a situation similar to that of his character in the film, who transmits messages to Elizabeth to those who cannot see or hear her.
