Short description
Stuart Rosenberg's Cool Hand Luke centers on Luke Jackson, a restless war veteran who lands on a Florida prison farm after a drunken night of destroying parking meters. Sentenced to two years of hard labor, he refuses to fall in line under either the warden's cruelty or the authority of Dragline, the camp's dominant inmate. Dragline's hostility turns to admiration, and Luke becomes a symbol of defiance for the other prisoners. Repeated stays in solitary confinement, known as "the box," fail to break him, and the administration's determination to crush his spirit grows alongside his standing among the men.
The 1967 release was Rosenberg's first feature as director, followed by WUSA, The Laughing Policeman, Voyage of the Damned, The Amityville Horror, Love and Bullets, Brubaker and The Pope of Greenwich Village. Paul Newman leads as Luke, with George Kennedy as Dragline and supporting turns from Luke Askew, Morgan Woodward, Harry Dean Stanton and Dennis Hopper among a credited cast of thirty-two. Donn Pearce, Frank Pierson and Hal Dresner wrote the screenplay.
