Short description
Police Story follows Hong Kong police officer Chan Ka-Kui, who arrests a powerful drug lord largely on his own after a chase through a slum. When the crime boss's secretary, Salina Fong, agrees to testify against her employer, Chan is assigned to protect her. His task is complicated by the gang's attempts to eliminate the witness and by the strain the assignment puts on his relationship with his girlfriend, May.
Jackie Chan directed the film, his fifth of fourteen as a director, between Project A and Armour of God. He also stars as Chan, alongside Brigitte Lin as Salina, Maggie Cheung as May, Bill Tung as Inspector Bill Chou, Chor Yuen as the crime boss Chu Tao, and Charlie Cho as John Ko. Chan co-wrote the screenplay with Edward Tang, and Leonard Ho produced. Roughly sixty cast members and fifty crew members are credited.
Released in December 1985, the Hong Kong production combined action, comedy, crime and thriller elements and grossed about 19 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.5 from around 47,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.6 from about 1,100 votes. A critics' rating of 7.4 from 31 reviews places it close to the two audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film has an extended ending that can be seen in almost all versions except the American one.
- Actress Brigitte Lin performed many of the stunts herself.
- Due to the large number of stunt performers injured during filming, Jackie Chan created his own stunt team, personally funding all employee payments.
- The American version of the film has a runtime of 88 minutes, while the Hong Kong version is 101 minutes long. Japanese and British versions also exist. The Japanese version is the most complete – 106 minutes – while the British version is based on the American one.
- Kin-san Lee dubbed Jackie Chan in some episodes.
- The film won the 1986 Hong Kong Film Award for Best Action Choreography ("Stunt Team JC").
- The slums of the city were specially built for the film on a hill called Hammer Hill.
- In the American version of the film, the main character's name was changed from "Kevin Chan" to "Jackie Chan".
- So much glass was broken during filming that the crew nicknamed the film "The Glass Story".
- The courtroom was built on the Golden Harvest studio lot.
- The pole sliding stunt in the shopping mall was filmed in one take without prior rehearsals.
- The scene where the criminals literally fly out of the bus window and fall to the ground was not actually planned. It was intended for the stuntmen to fall onto a car, but due to the fact that buses at that time were equipped with air brakes, it rolled back slightly, creating a small space between the bus and the car, into which the stuntmen fell. Furthermore, this scene was almost exactly copied by Sylvester Stallone in the film 'Tango & Cash' (1990), shot for shot.
- Hong Kong 'auto-moto' stuntman Blacky Ko doubled for Jackie Chan in the scene where Jackie's character had to ride a motorcycle through glass and knock down a person (in a shopping mall).
- Jackie Chan himself performed the musical theme "Hero's Story" in the film's credits.
- Jackie Chan decided to make this film after the huge box office failure of the thriller "The Protector" (1985), to show Americans how to make a movie.
