Initially, Eric Segal wrote a screenplay, and only then adapted it into a novel.
The scenes of Oliver Barrett walking through the snowy New York were added after the end of filming, when the filmmakers had practically run out of money, especially for filming permits in New York, so they had to shoot illegally, with a minimal crew involved in the process.
It was after filming this movie that Harvard permanently banned any commercial filming on its campus – it is believed that due to the negative impact on student life and studies, as well as damage to the campus, including the death of some trees under fake snow. The film crew was "asked to leave" just a week after filming began. After that, almost all films were shot on the grounds of other educational institutions.
Preparing for filming, Ryan O'Neal and Ali MacGraw learned to ice skate, and MacGraw also learned to play the harpsichord.
Eight promising actors turned down the role of Oliver Barrett, including Michael Douglas, John Voight, and Peter Fonda (1940-2019), even though they were offered 10% of the box office receipts.
The hockey teams of Cornell University and Dartmouth College were portrayed by the Dartmouth College hockey team. The coach of the Cornell University team gave permission to use his team's uniforms in the film, only on the condition that his team would win against their rivals in the film.
