Short description
Oliver Barrett IV, heir to a wealthy Boston banking family, is a law student at Harvard when he meets Jennifer Cavilleri, a music student of modest Italian-American background. Despite their different social worlds, the two fall in love and marry against the wishes of Oliver's family, who cut him off. The couple face the strain of his estrangement from his father while Oliver finishes his studies and begins his legal career. Their circumstances change when Jennifer becomes seriously ill, testing the marriage in ways neither expected.
The film was directed by Arthur Hiller, the second of the seventeen features he made in chronological order, following Penelope (1966) and preceding The Out-of-the-Towners (1970). Erich Segal wrote the screenplay, and Howard G. Minsky and Robert Evans produced it for Paramount. Ryan O'Neal and Ali MacGraw star as the couple, with John Marley, Ray Milland, Russell Nype and Tommy Lee Jones in supporting roles.
Made for about 2 million dollars, Love Story took in roughly 106 million dollars worldwide, a return that made it one of the most commercially successful releases of its time. Audiences have rated it 6.9 out of 10 on IMDb from around 40,000 votes and 6.8 out of 10 on TMDB from some 759 votes. A critics' rating of 6.2 out of 10 from 30 reviews places it somewhat below the general audience scores. Among Hiller's seventeen films, it remains the best known.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, Eric Segal wrote a screenplay, and only then adapted it into a novel.
- The scenes of Oliver Barrett walking through the snowy New York were added after the end of filming, when the filmmakers had practically run out of money, especially for filming permits in New York, so they had to shoot illegally, with a minimal crew involved in the process.
- It was after filming this movie that Harvard permanently banned any commercial filming on its campus – it is believed that due to the negative impact on student life and studies, as well as damage to the campus, including the death of some trees under fake snow. The film crew was "asked to leave" just a week after filming began. After that, almost all films were shot on the grounds of other educational institutions.
- Eight promising actors turned down the role of Oliver Barrett, including Michael Douglas, John Voight, and Peter Fonda (1940-2019), even though they were offered 10% of the box office receipts.
- The hockey teams of Cornell University and Dartmouth College were portrayed by the Dartmouth College hockey team. The coach of the Cornell University team gave permission to use his team's uniforms in the film, only on the condition that his team would win against their rivals in the film.
- Preparing for filming, Ryan O’Neal and Ely McGraw learned to ice skate, and McGraw also learned to play the harpsichord.
