Short description
Sandra is a successful German writer living with her husband Samuel and their eleven-year-old son Daniel in a remote chalet in the French Alps. When Samuel is found dead in the snow below their home, the circumstances are unclear: an accident, a suicide, or something else. Investigators settle on the possibility of murder, and Sandra becomes the main suspect. A year later she stands trial, and Daniel, whose eyesight is impaired, is called to testify. The proceedings turn into a close examination of the couple's troubled marriage, forcing mother and son to confront what they believe about each other.
Justine Triet directed and co-wrote the film with Arthur Harari. It is her fourth feature, following Solférino, In Bed with Victoria and Sibyl. Sandra Hüller plays Sandra Voyter, with Swann Arlaud as her lawyer, Milo Machado-Graner as Daniel, Antoine Reinartz as the advocate general and Samuel Theis as Samuel. The film runs 151 minutes.
Produced for about 7 million USD, it took roughly 36 million USD worldwide, a strong return for a French production of this scale. On IMDb it holds 7.6/10 from around 207,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.5/10 from about 3,500 votes, indicating a widely seen film with solid audience approval. A critics' rating of 8.6/10 from 287 reviews is noticeably higher than those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The hardest part was finding an actor for the role of Daniel, the son. Four months of searching were unsuccessful. Only three months later did they find Milo Machado Graner for this role, who then had to urgently learn to play the piano.
- Filming the argument between Sandra and her husband (played by Samuel Tays), which plays such a significant role in the script, took two days. Sandra Hüller naively hoped to shoot everything in one take, but the scene turned out to be unexpectedly difficult.
- For the filming of this movie, Sandra Hüller (who played Sandra Voyer) learned to speak fluent French.
- There were problems with filming the ball rolling down the stairs at the beginning of the film. It was not allowed to roll too quickly and out of the frame, so the ball was coated with a pet-safe adhesive.
- All scenes with Snoop (the dog) were filmed in one take over 20 shooting days.
