What's left behind the scenes

  • Makoto Shinkai saw abandoned buildings everywhere – whether visiting his parents or simply traveling around the country. This led him to create an animated film about the sadness associated with neglected places and abandoned buildings.
  • The scene where little Suzume plays and talks about a chair with her mother is based on a real-life situation. When Makoto Shinkai was returning home, his young daughter invariably asked if he had finished filming, to which he invariably replied, “Not yet.”
  • Makoto Shinkai was prompted to create a character in the form of a chair by the 2020 lockdowns – a young, healthy, and energetic man connected to a chair. This is how Shinkai himself felt during the pandemic.
