Suzume

Suzume is a 2022 Japanese animated fantasy adventure directed by Makoto Shinkai, who also wrote the screenplay. It centres on Suzume Iwato, a seventeen-year-old girl living in a quiet town on the island of Kyushu. Her life changes when she meets a young man searching for a particular door. Her curiosity leads her to an old, weathered door standing among ruins in the mountains. Opening it sets off a series of disasters across Japan, and Suzume must travel the country to close the doors that have begun opening and prevent further destruction.

The film belongs to the later part of Shinkai's filmography, arriving after Your Name. in 2016 and Weathering with You in 2019. Genki Kawamura, Koichiro Ito and Wakana Okamura produced it for TOHO, Aniplex, KADOKAWA and East Japan Marketing & Communications. Nanoka Hara voices Suzume, with Hokuto Matsumura, Eri Fukatsu, Shota Sometani, Sairi Ito and Kotone Hanase among the cast. Made on a budget of about 13 million USD, Suzume earned roughly 324 million USD worldwide, a strong return that places it among the more commercially successful anime films. On IMDb it holds 7.6 out of 10 from around 62,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 7.9 out of 10 from about 1,850 votes. A critics' rating of 7.9 out of 10 from 137 reviews is closely in line with the audience scores.
