The Out-Laws
Short description
The Out-Laws is an American action comedy about Owen Browning, a by-the-book bank manager preparing to marry Parker, the woman he loves. During the week of the wedding, his branch is robbed by a crew known as the Ghost Bandits. Parker's parents, Billy and Lilly McDermott, have just arrived in town, and their odd behaviour leads Owen to suspect that his future in-laws may be the robbers. As the two families collide, Owen tries to hold the wedding together while working out what his prospective in-laws are really doing.
The film is directed by Tyler Spindel, his second feature after The Wrong Missy (2020) and before Kinda Pregnant (2025). The screenplay is by Evan Turner and Ben Zazove, and the producers include Adam Sandler, Allen Covert and star Adam Devine, with production by Happy Madison Productions. Devine plays Owen, Nina Dobrev plays Parker, and Pierce Brosnan and Ellen Barkin play Billy and Lilly. Julie Hagerty and Richard Kind appear as Owen's parents, and 42 cast members and 90 crew are credited.
Released in July 2023, the film runs 95 minutes. Audiences are divided: on IMDb it holds 5.4 from around 41,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6 out of 10 from roughly 850 votes. The two scores point to a modest, mixed reception rather than broad approval.
What's left behind the scenes
- Screenwriters Ben Zazov and Evan Turner pitched the film idea to Adam Devine back in 2016. He jotted down the essence of it in a notebook, then stuck it away somewhere and completely forgot about it for several years. Later, he found the notebook, read what was written in it, decided the idea was quite good, and immediately contacted the screenwriters, secretly fearing that the idea was already gone. Fortunately, his fears were unfounded.
- The idea of dressing his character as Shrek during the robbery scene belonged to Adam Devine himself. When it turned out that he had to start getting made up as Shrek at 5 a.m. (and the shooting lasted for several weeks), he bitterly regretted it.
- The character Adam Divine uses the phrase “she left me roses on the stairs” as a password. This is a line from the song “All The Small Things” (2000) by the American punk band “Blink-182”.
