The Night of the 12th

In a town at the foot of the French Alps, a young woman is killed on her way home from a party in the night of the 12th. Yohan Vivès, newly appointed head of a criminal investigation unit in Grenoble, takes charge of the case, working alongside his colleague Marceau. The inquiry leads them through the life of the victim, Clara, and the men who had been close to her, each relationship marked by indifference, jealousy or a sense of possession. Questioning follows questioning and suspects are not lacking, yet the evidence never settles into a clear answer, and the case begins to weigh on Vivès far beyond his professional duty.

The film is directed by Dominik Moll, who wrote the screenplay with Gilles Marchand. It is his fourth feature, arriving after With a Friend Like Harry... in 2000 and Only the Animals in 2019. Bastien Bouillon plays Vivès, with Bouli Lanners as Marceau, Anouk Grinberg as the investigating judge, and Mouna Soualem, Pauline Serieys and Théo Cholbi among the thirty credited cast members.

Released in July 2022, the film is a co-production between Belgium, France and the United States. It took about three million dollars worldwide, a modest figure consistent with its scale. On IMDb it holds a 7 out of 10 from around 13,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.9 from roughly 800. A critics' rating of 7.8 from 67 reviews places it above both audience scores.
