Short description
Robert McCall has left his life as a government operative behind and settled in southern Italy, hoping for a quiet existence. He befriends the people around him and begins to feel at home, but he soon learns that local crime bosses have their community under their control. When the situation turns deadly, McCall takes it upon himself to protect the people he has come to care about by confronting the mafia directly.
The film is the third entry in the Equalizer series, directed by Antoine Fuqua from a screenplay by Richard Wenk, with Denzel Washington returning in the lead role and also producing alongside Steve Tisch and Clayton Townsend. Dakota Fanning, Eugenio Mastrandrea, David Denman, Gaia Scodellaro and Remo Girone appear in supporting roles. It was Fuqua's seventeenth film as director, following Emancipation and preceding Michael, and it was shot in Italy and the United States.
Released in late August 2023, the film had a budget of 70 million dollars and earned around 191 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its production cost. On IMDb it holds a 6.8 rating from roughly 160,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.3 from a much smaller voter base. A critics' rating of 6.3 from 168 reviews places it below the audience scores, indicating that viewers responded more warmly to the film than reviewers did.
What's left behind the scenes
- Posters released in the US and abroad use the phrase “The Final Chapter” in various forms. However, in one interview during the film's promotional campaign, director Antoine Fuqua stated that a prequel and sequel to the film were quite possible if Denzel Washington, the lead actor, showed interest in the project.
- One of the characters wears a baseball cap with the inscription “Vienna Inn Est. 1960.” Vienna Inn is a bar and restaurant in Vienna, Virginia, near the CIA headquarters in Langley. Furthermore, Vienna Inn is a local trademark, once the main distributor of Budweiser beer in the United States. Vienna Inn is also famous for its chili dogs and perpetually irritated and dissatisfied staff.
- At the beginning of the film in Sicily, the protagonist, played by Denzel Washington, returns stolen money ($366,400) from a union pension fund to its rightful owner, Greg. In the next scene, Emma, played by Dakota Fanning, delivers the money to Greg, who lives in Boston, Massachusetts, the same city where the protagonist resides.
- Jay Natelli, who played Greg in the film, appeared in a small role as a juror in the 11th episode of the 4th season of the original television series "The Equalizer" (1985-1989). The role was so minor that the actor’s name was not even mentioned in the credits.
- The fictional town in southern Italy was filmed in Atrani, in the province of Salerno. Dakota Fanning (who played Emma here) previously starred in the miniseries “Ripley,” based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel and the film “The Talented Mr. Ripley” (Anthony Minghella, 1999), which was also filmed in Atrani.
