What's left behind the scenes
- According to a review in The New Yorker, the film was edited on a home computer.
- The film was shot in Ryan Johnson's hometown. Ryan attended the school shown in the film.
- In the newspaper reporting on the missing girl, one can also notice a small article which, upon closer inspection, turns out to be a brief retelling of the plot of the pilot episode of the series "V.I.P." (1998).
- Ryan Johnson wrote the screenplay for the film back in 1997, but it took him six years to secure funding for the project.
- The costume worn by Lucas Haas throughout the film is based on Jonathan Frid's costume in "Dark Shadows" (1966).
- Ryan Johnson's directorial debut.
- In his conversation with Truman, Brendan describes his teacher as strict but fair. In real life, Mrs. Kasprzyk taught English at San Clemente High School, where the film was actually shot. Students spoke of her as a demanding but just educator.
