Short description
Brendan Frye keeps to himself at his southern California high school, preferring solitude to the social currents around him. That changes when Emily, a former girlfriend, reaches out to him and then vanishes. Convinced something has happened to her, Brendan begins asking questions, and his search draws him into the school's hidden criminal underworld. Aiding him is his only real friend, The Brain, whose knowledge of his classmates opens doors. Along the way Brendan crosses paths with a wealthy and guarded girl named Laura, a threatening enforcer called Tugger, and a drug supplier known as The Pin. What begins as a search for a missing person becomes something darker as Brendan refuses to back down.
Brick was released in 2006 and marked the feature directing debut of Rian Johnson, who also wrote the screenplay. It came before his later films, including The Brothers Bloom, Looper, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and the Knives Out mysteries. The cast is led by Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Brendan, with Nora Zehetner, Matt O'Leary, Noah Fleiss, Lukas Haas, and Meagan Good in supporting roles. Produced by Ram Bergman and Mark G. Mathis, the film earned about 4 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 7.1 rating from 143 critics' reviews, while on TMDB its audience rating is 6.8 from 1,430 votes, a modest gap between professional and viewer response.

- The film was shot in Ryan Johnson's hometown. Ryan attended the school shown in the film.
- In the newspaper reporting on the missing girl, one can also notice a small article which, upon closer inspection, turns out to be a brief retelling of the plot of the pilot episode of the series "V.I.P." (1998).
- Ryan Johnson wrote the screenplay for the film back in 1997, but it took him six years to secure funding for the project.
