Freejack

Freejack is a science-fiction action film set partly in 1991 and partly in a version of 2009. Alex Furlong is a racing driver who is pulled out of his car at the instant of a fatal crash and transported eighteen years into the future. There he learns that the wealthy of that era extend their lives by transferring their minds into healthy bodies taken from the past, and that he has been selected as the new vessel for an ailing corporate magnate named Ian McCandless. Alex escapes before the procedure can be carried out, becoming a fugitive, and a relentless bounty hunter named Victor Vacendak leads the hunt to bring him back.

The film was directed by Geoff Murphy, its fourth feature in the chronological list of his work, following The Quiet Earth and Young Guns II and preceding Under Siege 2: Dark Territory. Emilio Estevez plays Alex, with Mick Jagger as Vacendak, Rene Russo as Julie Redlund, Anthony Hopkins as McCandless, and supporting turns from Jonathan Banks and David Johansen. The screenplay is credited to Ronald Shusett, Steven Pressfield and Dan Gilroy.

Released in January 1992, the film had a budget of about 30 million US dollars and took roughly 17 million worldwide, so it fell well short of recouping its cost. Audiences have been largely indifferent: it holds a rating of 5.4 on IMDb from around 19,000 votes and 5.5 on TMDB from a few hundred votes. A critics' rating of 4.4 from 21 reviews puts professional opinion roughly in line with the audience response.
