Short description

Bound centers on Corky, an ex-convict hired to renovate an apartment in a Chicago building. There she meets her neighbors: Caesar, a mobster involved in laundering money, and his girlfriend Violet. Violet is drawn to Corky, and the two begin a relationship. Violet knows that Caesar is holding two million dollars that belongs to his boss, and she and Corky plan to take the money and start a new life together. Carrying out the scheme proves harder than expected, because Caesar is unpredictable and dangerous.

The film is the feature debut of Lilly Wachowski and Lana Wachowski, who also wrote the screenplay and went on to direct The Matrix and its sequels, Speed Racer, Cloud Atlas, Jupiter Ascending, and, for Lana Wachowski, The Matrix Resurrections. Gina Gershon plays Corky, Jennifer Tilly plays Violet, and Joe Pantoliano plays Caesar, with supporting turns from John P. Ryan, Christopher Meloni, and Richard C. Sarafian. It was produced by Andrew Lazar and Stuart Boros for Summit Entertainment, Newmarket Capital Group, and the Dino De Laurentiis Company.

Made for about 5 million dollars and released in September 1996, the film took in roughly 7 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.3 from around 67,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.2 from over a thousand votes. A critics' rating of 8 out of 10 across 71 reviews places it above both audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film received funding on the condition that Jennifer Tilly would play Corky. Shortly before filming began, the actress cast as Violet left the project, and Gina Gershon was cast in her place. It soon became clear that Gershon was better suited for the role of Corky, so she and Tilly switched roles.
  • John P. Ryan's (1936-2007) final appearance on screen.
  • Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly performed the lesbian love scene completely nude, and themselves, i.e. without the use of body doubles.
  • Several actors sustained injuries during the film's action scenes. In the scene where Barry Kivell's character is hit in the head with a toilet, the actor suffered a head injury. And after filming the scene where Gina Gershon's character knocks a gun out of the hand of the character played by Joe Pantoliano, the actress had to get stitches on her hand – the impact was that strong.
  • The central love scene in Corky's apartment was filmed in one take. The Wachowski brothers, the directors, decided that this would look more realistic than a cut from several takes. Such scenes are filmed on a closed set, meaning a minimal number of personnel are present, however, “minimal number” is still quite crowded. Panels serving as walls need to be moved around the action area to allow the operator to shoot from the desired angle, and this requires personnel.
