Set in the American West around the start of the Civil War, Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 follows settlers as they stake out new lives across territories from Wyoming to Kansas, among them families building the settlement of Horizon. Their arrival puts them in conflict with the Apache who already live on the land. Elsewhere, a woman flees with a young child after shooting a man, and his sons set out after her, a pursuit that draws in a horse trader, Hayes Ellison, when he crosses paths with one of the pursuers.
The film is the fourth directed by Kevin Costner, after Dances with Wolves, The Postman and Open Range, and he also stars as Hayes Ellison. Costner wrote the screenplay with Jon Baird and produced with Howard Kaplan and Mark Gillard. The large ensemble includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee and Michael Rooker, with 95 credited cast members and 222 credited crew. It runs just over three hours and is the first part of a story continued in Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2.
Made for a budget of about 50 million dollars, it took in roughly 39 million dollars worldwide. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.8 out of 10 from around 700 votes, indicating a modestly positive but not enthusiastic audience response.
