Ghost in the Shell

Set in 2029, the film imagines a world where computer networks and cybernetic body modifications have reshaped everyday life. People can replace limbs and organs with artificial parts, and some exist in little more than a synthetic shell, with only remnants of their original brain cells preserving the identity and personality known as the ghost. This technology leaves people open to a new kind of intrusion: hackers who can breach a person's mind and alter it. When a mysterious, widely sought hacker called the Puppet Master becomes entangled in politics, Section 9, a security unit of cybernetically enhanced officers, is assigned to investigate.

The story follows Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg officer in that unit, and her colleague Batou as they pursue the elusive figure. The film was directed by Mamoru Oshii, the sixth of the thirteen films he has directed in chronological order, arriving between Patlabor 2: The Movie and Avalon. Kazunori Ito wrote the screenplay, and the voice cast includes Atsuko Tanaka as Motoko Kusanagi, Akio Otsuka as Batou, Iemasa Kayumi as the Puppetmaster, Koichi Yamadera as Togusa, Yutaka Nakano as Ishikawa and Tamio Ohki as Aramaki.

Released in 1995, the film runs 83 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.9 from around 172,000 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 7.9, from roughly 4,000 votes. A critics' rating of 7.8 from 62 reviews places it close to those audience scores.
