The Core
Short description
The Core is a science fiction thriller about a crisis beneath the Earth's surface. Geophysicist Josh Keyes discovers that the planet's inner core has stopped rotating, and the weakening magnetic field is already causing disasters around the world. With the atmosphere and climate deteriorating, a team of scientists and astronauts is assembled to travel into the Earth's interior in a specially built vessel and detonate nuclear devices intended to restart the core's rotation.
Jon Amiel directed the film, which sits seventh in his filmography, between Entrapment and Creation. Aaron Eckhart plays Keyes, with Hilary Swank as astronaut Rebecca Childs, Delroy Lindo as inventor Ed Brazzleton, Stanley Tucci as Conrad Zimsky, Tchéky Karyo as Serge and DJ Qualls as Theodore Finch. Cooper Layne and John Rogers wrote the screenplay, and Layne produced alongside David Foster and Sean Bailey.
Released in March 2003, the film had a budget of 60 million dollars and took about 74 million dollars worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 5.5/10 from roughly 115,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.8/10 from about 2,250 votes. A critics' rating of 5.4/10 from 157 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Work on the Trafalgar Square scene at the beginning of the film took over six months because almost all the birds in it were added using computer graphics.
- The scene of the Colosseum's destruction was filmed using a specially constructed 12-meter model.
- The song "Echelon" by 30 Seconds to Mars plays during the end credits of the film. At the same time, a receding Earth is shown rotating from East to West, which is inaccurate.
- Following the tragic loss of the Space Shuttle Columbia on February 1, 2003, all movie trailers were recalled to remove a short scene in which the shuttle makes an emergency landing. At the same time, the producers assured that this episode would remain in the film itself unchanged.
- Several scenes of the film were shot on March 16, 2002, aboard the modern American aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln by special permission.
