Risky Business
Short description
Joel Goodson is a seventeen-year-old high school senior living in an affluent Chicago suburb, where he has built a reputation as a dependable son with ambitions of attending Princeton. When his parents leave town for a week, he finds himself alone in their house with his father's Porsche available to him, and his friend Miles pushes him to take chances he normally would not. A decision to call a sex worker sets off a chain of events he cannot control, drawing him into a business arrangement with Lana, another woman he meets, and putting him at odds with her pimp, Guido. Joel has to find a way to pay for the damage he has caused and get the house back in order before his parents return.
Paul Brickman wrote and directed the film, his first as director, with Steve Tisch and Jon Avnet producing. Tom Cruise plays Joel, Rebecca De Mornay plays Lana, and Joe Pantoliano plays Guido, alongside Richard Masur, Bronson Pinchot and Curtis Armstrong. Made for around six million dollars, it took in roughly sixty-four million worldwide, a strong return that made it one of the notable releases of 1983.
Audience responses are moderate, with a rating of 6.8 on IMDb from about 108,000 votes and 6.6 on TMDB from around 1,500 votes. A critics' score of 7.3 from 54 reviews places it somewhat above those viewer ratings.
What's left behind the scenes
- Among the actors who auditioned for the lead role were Tom Hanks and Nicolas Cage.
- Filming took place in Illinois from July 18 to November 19, 1982.
- To make Tom Cruise look even younger in this film, the producers made him undergo grueling physical training. The actor had to train daily, as a result of which he lost 10 pounds. However, after that, he had to eat exclusively high-calorie food so that he would resemble a fresh-faced and round-cheeked teenager.
- Sean Penn filmed a cameo appearance, playing a passenger in the "Porsche."
- Two different endings were filmed, which were tested on audience screenings during test screenings. Based on the results, the version that was ultimately included in the final cut of the film was chosen. Director Paul Brickman preferred a more pessimistic ending.
- Timothy Hutton was the first candidate for the role of Joel, but he turned it down.
- The scene where the Porsche was sinking into the lake was too risky, as a failure of this stunt would have significantly impacted the film's budget and jeopardized the successful completion of filming.
